Extended Information:

A baby’s digestive tract is relatively sterile prior to birth.

New research suggests that unborn babies may swallow some flora present in amniotic fluid while in the womb. Still, the bulk of a baby’s flora comes from the journey through the birth canal.

These flora then migrate to the bowel and proliferate in response to breast milk, which preferentially enhances the growth of beneficial flora, in particular Bifidobacterium species.

Unfortunately many mothers may pass on undesirable flora both in utero and during birth due to poor dietary choices, hormonal dysregulation, antibiotic use and stress. This can mean that baby’s gut flora is disturbed from the outset.

Similarly babies that are born by caesarean section never get that initial micro flora inoculation. Research shows their gut bacteria populations are less diverse and more prone to pathogenic infiltration. Interestingly babies that are not breastfed tend to have similar bacterial populations to those that are caesarean born.

Antibiotic use in infants and pregnant mothers can also contribute towards pathogenic bacterial overgrowth. This aberration in gut flora is theorised to have a role to play in the pathogenesis of allergies (eczema, asthma) gastrointestinal disorders (reflux, colic, diarrhoea, constipation, failure to thrive) and irritability in babies.
