Extended Information:
Q What is Vitamin C, and what is its role in the body?
A Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant vitamin, and is one of life’s most important nutrients. Because humans cannot make their own Vitamin C, and Vitamin C molecules break down quickly within the body, this nutrient needs to be supplied through the diet each day.
In addition to its best-known role as “the immunity vitamin”, Vitamin C also helps the body to synthesise and maintain collagen. Collagen is an important part of connective tissue, which provides structure and support to many organs in the body; and is found in skin, blood vessels, bone, teeth, tendons, cartilage and ligaments. Additionally, Vitamin C assists the body in the process of absorbing Iron.
Another key Vitamin C role is as a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect cells against damage from the free radicals produced during stress, smoking, injury, infection, anxiety, pollution, and natural metabolic processes. The body’s need for Vitamin C can therefore increase during these situations, and a supplement may help to maintain sufficient levels.
Finally, large concentrations of Vitamin C also occur in the adrenal glands, where it assists them in responding to stress. This helps to explain why the body uses up its Vitamin C reserves more quickly during stress, and why supplementing may be helpful during long-term stress.
Q What is Ester-C ® and how does it differ from ordinary Vitamin C?
A When Vitamin C is metabolised in the body, it breaks down into secondary compounds, called metabolites. Scientific studies show that Threonic Acid*, one of these metabolites, is responsible for the differences between ordinary Vitamin C and Ester-C ®, including:
*Threonic Acid is standardised in Ester-C ® as Calcium Threonate.
